Special Olympics teaches…

CEO CornerSeveral months ago I was talking with a parent of a Special Olympics athlete.  I asked the Dad how Special Olympics had impacted his family.  His response was, “Special Olympics has made it okay for people to look at people with disabilities”.  Immediately I knew what he meant.  Many of us were raised not to stare at people with disabilities.  Special Olympics made it okay to look, and made it okay to engage persons with disabilities in conversation and to have them as friends.  If you have a child with a disability, if you are a volunteer, what has Special Olympics taught you?

– Pat Carpenter Bourgeois, President and CEO of Special Olympics Louisiana

World Kindness Day

Today is World Kindness Day, a day to be extra kind to your family, friends, and neighbors.  What will your act of kindness be today?

We have many athletes in our program that are ridiculed on a daily basis.  They are called names and excluded from social situations.

Here is a challenge for you…
Part 1:  If you know one of our athletes, be sure to include them in your daily activities.  Talk to them, sit with them at lunch, get to really know who they are as a person and not just their disability.

Part 2:  Take a picture of you with our athlete and email it to us.  Best ones will be put on our Facebook page.

We look forward to hearing from all of you.  Happy World Kindness Day!
