Meet One of Our Volunteers

keifer ackley award photoKeifer Ackley is the president of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at McNeese State University. Ackley helped organize their “Monster Mash” Halloween dance that had 150 current students at McNeese and over 50 Special Olympics Louisiana-Southwest Area athletes in attendance.

During the dance, it was announced that Ackley had been granted the 2017 American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (Louisiana Chapter) Scholarship Award for his efforts with Special Olympics Louisiana at McNeese. Also, in April, he worked with his fraternity to start an on-campus basketball tournament called “PIKE Slamma Jamma” that was able to raise $4,500 for SOLA.

Ackley says, “We tend to become selfish in college as we become more independent and stressed. Events like these are important for students to learn how to unify, love, and encourage others. It’s truly remarkable to see how many lives are impacted.”

“We win moments, not Games”

Acadiana Coach Lanclos said, “We win moments, not games” after the recent State Summer Games. As true as this statement is, Team Louisiana is doing both! Winning moments they will cherish forever, and winning games right now at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games. The excitement is contagious as we boast about having the best Unified Flag Football team in the nation, an undefeatedGolf goofing off on medal stands Unified Basketball team, over 20 gold medals and are bringing home 80+ awards thus far. (We still have lots more to be awarded!) The memories and stories are unique, several athletes and partners have remarked that this event has been life changing. We are truly proud of the games we are winning, but even more excited about the moments our entire organization is experiencing!

Geaux Team Louisiana!

The Torch has been Passed!

Our team had a great time at the 32nd Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run International Conference that was held in Orlando, Florida! We were able to meet with around 1,000 law enforcement and Special Olympics representatives for a weekend of learning, inspiration, and fun. At the conference, the Torch has been passed to us and next year the Law Enforcement Torch Run will be hosted here in Louisiana!
