Hammond Blues & BBQ

This weekend, March 21-22, Downtown Hammond will host “Hammond Blues & BBQ.” This event will feature bbq’ers from across the country along with locals competing the the Backyard Boogie.  It is sponsored by KCBS and is the largest state-sanctioned bbq event in the state.  There is also opportunities for “Chicken Little” for bbq’ers under the age of 16. Local bands will also be featured at this 2-day event.

BBQ Challenge

We are only 2 days away from the Blues and BBQ Challenge!  We will get things kicked off this Friday at 4pm in front of the Hammond Police Station.  There will be great music, great food, and great people.

Blues and BBQ was a smokin’ success

Hammond Blues and BBQ photoThank you to all of those who came out the Hammond Blues and BBQ Challenge to support Special Olympics Louisiana this past weekend. Total money raised and pictures to come via our Facebook page.

Special Olympics Louisiana’s Maria Sanchez remarks, “We were so pleasantly surprised by the number of people that came out to support our charity and enjoy the wonderful weather and food. Next year will be the 10th year of the Blues and BBQ Challenge which we are hoping will be the biggest year yet!”

Local newspaper, the Hammond Daily Star, ran a nice article about the entire event. It stated: “…The Piggly Wiggly People’s Choice alone garnered $11,349…”. “It turned out to be very profitable,” event coordinator Cindy Shannon said of the competition….”. “…The 66 teams in the Walmart Backyard Boogie competition ranged from local Hammond businesses, to teams of relatives and neighbors, to groups from Covington and Mandeville…”. This morning we are sitting down with Maria Sanchez, Director of Special Projects SE Region about the upcoming Blues and BBQ event March 23 & 24.  Check out our candid interview below!

Can you explain what Blues and BBQ is about?

Blues & BBQ is Louisiana’s biggest BBQ challenge.  Its mission is to bring business and tourism to Hammond, while raising money for local charities.

Where does it take place?

It takes place in Downtown Hammond, along the railroad tracks, from the train station past Cate Street Seafood station.

Who does it benefit?

It benefits Special Olympics Louisiana, TARC, and Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center.

What can people expect?

Days filled with food, music and entertainment!  Tyler Kinchen & the Right Pieces and Bottoms Up will provide the musical entertainment for the event.

Why would people want to go?

Why not is the answer!  You spend a perfect day with family, friends and your community enjoying great food, while contributing to 3 local charities that need help!
