CEO Corner – Unified Partners

CEO CornerSpecial Olympics Unified Sports® promotes people with and without intellectual disabilities playing on the same team together. These peers of similar ability and age are called Unified Partners, they train and compete alongside Special Olympics athletes. We have seen that pairing these two groups together promotes understanding and friendships.

Special Olympics Louisiana is looking for Unified Partners to train and work alongside our athletes. Anyone in Elementary to College and beyond can become a Unified Partner.
Contact our office today to sign up. We promise you will not regret it!

SO College

SO College is program that partners colleges with Special Olympic athletes.  Ultimately, it unites college students to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sports, friendship, advocacy and other activities.

We recently sat down with Samantha McMillan, who oversees SO College for Special Olympics Louisiana to ask her some questions about this great program.

How many colleges in Louisiana are taking part in this program?
“There are three (3) officially recognized colleges in Louisiana and they are, Louisiana State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, and McNeese State University.”
Why is it important?
“SO College is important because it expands the Project Unify movement, makes young adults aware of our athletes, while teaching understanding of inclusiveness, and promoting respect.”
What are the types of events that can take place within SO College?
“Anything to promote inclusiveness, and it does not have to be a competition.  Some colleges hold rallies or dances on their campus’ so that people with and without an intellectual disability can participate.”

Take a Chance, and Change Your Destiny.

FREE TO LEARN is about providing both children and adults with intellectual disabilities a chance to succeed, and there is no better example of this, than what takes place year round at Special Olympics Louisiana. For the participants, the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families is life changing.

Free To Learn
FREE TO LEARN is a $100,000 Education Giveaway. While the $100,000 that we award is substantial, the real prize that comes from purchasing a ticket, is seeing the smile on the face of a Special Olympics athlete when a medal is placed over their head. Today, we invite you to be a part of their journey as well. In doing so, you will not only help them achieve their dreams, but perhaps yours as well. So, purchase a ticket and take a chance on your future, the future of someone you love or the future of someone that is counting on you.
