We Want You!

Calling all athletes, families, coaches, partners, and volunteers. This is your chance to shine!

One of our favorite things here at SOLA is hearing amazing stories from our Special Olympics community.

Please share your story with us. We want to know how you became involved with Special Olympics and what kind of difference it has made in your everyday life! You could even share your best photos from an event or competition.

We will even share some of your stories to our blog, Facebook, and Twitter!

“Caring Bunny” Coming to Louisiana

Just in time for Easter, the Caring Bunny is coming to Louisiana! The Caring Bunny offers private photo session with the Easter Bunny for children with special needs and disabilities in a sensory-friendly environment. These events are held before the mall opens to ensure a calm and quiet environment. They will turn down the lights, turn off the music and fountains, and provide activity stations for the children so they don’t have to wait in a line.  It’s a wonderful opportunity for families and Special Olympics athletes.

Community Gatepath/AbilityPath’s program “Caring Bunny,” is happening Sunday, March 22 and Sunday, March 29 at almost 138 malls nationwide.  AbilityPath developed this program about 5 years ago in partnership with Noerr Programs and Simon Malls,

It’s UP to YOU

We have been a little crazy around here, with the recent State Summer Games and in the process of revamping our website, we haven’t had time to blog! With that being said, what types of topics do you want to hear about? What would you like us to post about? OR do you have a topic, video, article, picture, etc. you want to share? Let us know about it. You can comment on this post or email us.

Dreaming of Loretta Claiborne

Recently, one of Special Olympics most famous faces, Loretta ClaibornLaney Langee, visited Dodson Elementary in New Iberia, LA.  She was there to talk about her life, her struggles, and her successes.

A few weeks later a student at Dodson, Laney Lange, wrote a story about Loretta.  But it wasn’t just any story.  She had a dream that she was Loretta Claiborne!  She dreamed that she was at her school as Loretta and everyone was welcoming her.

This story was very inspiring and representatives from Special Olympics International even took part and read Laney’s story!

Read Laney’s story here.

Geaux Over the Edge

Over the Edge is this Friday! There are still a few spots for those daring enough to take part in this once in a lifetime adventure. First you will start with rappelling down the side of the 26 story Benson Tower (that’s over 400 ft!). Then you will be whisked away in a helicopter from the Superdome to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office SWAT Training Facility. Here you will participate in several training exercises and receive a SWAT team jacket. Then you will be flown back to the Superdome. Don’t miss this chance, sign up today! We dare you!
