Did you know that Special Olympics Louisiana offers free health examinations for our athletes? Healthy Athletes is a large part of our organization. Our athletes are screened through Special Smiles, Healthy Hearing, Health Promotion, Fit Feet, Fun Fitness, and Opening Eyes. Our athletes are screened, free of charge, at our state competitions. Athletes also receive a “goody” bag for Special Smiles and Health promotion filled with lots of great tools to keep up the good work! Come out and find the booth at our State Games!
Sean Adams recently qualified to advance to 2014 Special Olympics USA Games this summer in New Jersey. He will compete against athletes from across the country as a member of Team Louisiana. He has been training daily in Aquatics to enhance his skills. Going to USA Games has made him realize that in addition to training, he must find other ways to get stronger and healthier. Although his family has always talked about healthy practices such as nutrition and exercise, Sean took it upon himself to sign-up for the Healthy Athletes program. At State Indoor Games this past March, Sean participated in the Health Promotion and Special Smiles disciplines for the first time. Not only did he receive screenings in these two disciplines, he was also provided with the education and tools necessary to make healthy decisions every day. His mother has expressed that the Healthy Athletes program has allowed him to remain independent and be held accountable his for personal wellbeing. His commitment has made him more conscious and aware of making healthy choices both inside and outside of Special Olympics. He has continued to be proactive about his health and looks forward to participating in Healthy Athletes at upcoming events.
It seems that everyday, Special Olympics is changing the way people think of our athletes. It may take one at a time, but we are all trying to Spread the Word. Marc Bernard Ackerman was one person who’s mind has been changed.
Mr. Ackerman recently attended a train-the-trainer event for Healthy Athletes Special Smiles and had his whole perspective changed!
Say cheese! During our state events and other times throughout the year, our athletes receive non-evasive screening from local dentists and dental students. They learn the proper way to brush and take care of their teeth in a fun way!
This not only helps our athletes, but helps dental professionals about our athletes as well!
Tomorrow, some of our athletes will participate in a Healthy Athlete event in New Orleans. The event, LSU Dental Day, is done in conjunction with Special Smiles and will take place at the LSU School of Dentistry. Dental students will perform x-rays, teeth cleaning and a full exam for our athletes. This is a wonderful program and we are excited that we can give our athletes this opportunity.
