48 hours left to 2013

Time is running out to make your 2013 tax-deductible gift to Special Olympics Louisiana. And with less than 48 hours to go, the stakes just got higher.

We’ve written you about the exciting challenge issued by our partner Finish Line – through midnight tomorrow, they will match your donation, dollar for dollar, up to a campaign total of $250,000.

Every dollar we raise matters. Additional support means more trainings and competitions, more joy and confidence, and more athletes in the swimming lanes, on the soccer fields, and on the running tracks. Please help us stretch a little further to meet this challenge head on.

Train like a Champion

From Friday November 15th, through Tuesday November 19th, athletes, partners, and coaches from around the state, converged on Camp Beauregard to train like champions for the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games!  Athletes and partners trained in athletics, aquatics, basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, golf, and tennis all with the hopes of being selected to represent Louisiana!

A huge thank you to the staff at Camp Beauregard.  Their help and dedication the past few days have been tremendous and we are grateful for the use of their facilities!  Also, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s office, Louisiana State Police, and the Knights of Columbus did an amazing job of cooking for us all weekend and for that we say thank you.

Coaching Unified Sports

Bayouland Camp Shriver Unified sports playersThe National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) in conjunction with Special Olympics North America has created a new, free course titled “Coaching Unified Sports.” Check it out here

The course is very interactive and engaging. It features 4 different chapters including situational scenarios and testimonials (Kurt Warner & his wife are featured). After the course is fully completed, coaches receive a certificate stating that they completed the course. The best thing about the NFHS site is that you can take the course at your own pace. Some other unique features about the NFHS site is the “Coach Search” element and the Transcript feature. Signing up with the NFHS is free. Coaches taking this course will gain a general knowledge to successfully build an unified team.

Geaux Over the Edge

Over the Edge is this Friday! There are still a few spots for those daring enough to take part in this once in a lifetime adventure. First you will start with rappelling down the side of the 26 story Benson Tower (that’s over 400 ft!). Then you will be whisked away in a helicopter from the Superdome to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office SWAT Training Facility. Here you will participate in several training exercises and receive a SWAT team jacket. Then you will be flown back to the Superdome. Don’t miss this chance, sign up today! We dare you!

Leadership

On Friday, August 23rd, our staff, Area Directors, and key Volunteers gathered at the Landmark Hotel in Metairie, LA for Leadership Training conducted by the Louisiana Army National Guard.

The training session focused on how to be a great and effective leader within the Special Olympics Louisiana community.  Along with the presentation, each attendee completed a personality test and received books on leadership.

Thanks to the Louisiana National Guard for a great training!
