Meet the McCallisters

IMG_8363

Becca, Kassi, and Kylie McCallister have been volunteering for Special Olympics Louisiana for 15 years. They are a retired military family from Leesville, Louisiana. Kylie is studying to become a special education teacher herself.

It’s important to Becca that she shares this experience with her children because it brings them closer together and allows them to bond with each other. She says, “We should treat others with compassion and acceptance. Serving others holds a special place in our hearts and we are blessed with their unconditional love.”

Family Support Network

Did you know family members of Special Olympics athletes have an important role to play in Special Olympics outreach? Today, thousands of family members of Special Olympics athletes serve as key leaders and sources of support for one another as they attend training, competitions, meetings and other activities together.

The Family Support Network is an organized project whereby Special Olympics Louisiana conducts outreach to families unfamiliar with Special Olympics by developing partnerships with existing community organizations and by training Family Messengers to become leaders and spokespeople for the Special Olympics Louisiana. Family members (Family Messengers) are systematically matched with parents new to Special Olympics who are seeking information and support from a peer.

Family Support Network helps families help each other. With the assistance of similar agencies families have a support system within Special Olympics. Families have the opportunity to mentor, learn and provide resources and emotional support to one another.

The Family Support Network connects Special Olympics families with new families and provides support and information in a critical time of need in the following ways:

  • Provides educational, sports and training workshops
  • Creates opportunities for family members to become advocates for the Special Olympics movement
  • Brings families together to share ideas, issues, and common interests
  • Encourages new families to join Special Olympics
  • Builds strong communities

Senior Trooper Steven Vincent tragically lost his life protecting and serving our community. We are asking our SOLA family to keep his family, friends, and the Louisiana State Police in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.
