Changing Perceptions

CEO CornerI meet people every day, some know a lot about Special Olympics and some know very little. I started to think about those who are unfamiliar with Special Olympics…what are their preconceived notions as to who we are and what we do? I believe education helps, and I certainly believe introducing our athletes to those who have never been exposed to Special Olympics is a powerful educational tool, but what else? What else can we do to change people’s perceptions of our organization and our athletes?

– Pat Carpenter Bourgeois, President and CEO of Special Olympics Louisiana

Building Teams

As summertime approaches, that old familiar feeling has set in, hasn’t it?  We’re not talking about the 90+ degree heat or the mosquitoes , we are talking about that feeling of wanting to get out and do something.  Old man winter has went away for a few months and its time to go back outside and enjoy this time of year.

Why not get more involved with Special Olympics Louisiana this summer?!  We know, we know, it’s a great idea!  There are a bunch of ways to get involved: games, fundraisers, donations, you can even come Volunteer at our state office in Hammond… But, we are talking more specifically right now.  We want YOU to get involved with our Area Management Teams.  Yes, this is more that just a summer gig, but what better time to get started than now?

We are searching the entire state of Louisiana for people to be part of these teams!   You can read the press release to learn more. If you have any questions, please call our office at 1-800-345-6644.

So, what are you waiting for?  Put the remote down and get involved with Special Olympics Louisiana.  We’ll see YOU soon!

On Memorial Day

To all of the men and women who have served our great country over the years, we say thank you for your service!  Without you, our athletes would not have the opportunity to compete on a daily basis.  A lot of you also participate in our Law Enforcement National Guard and Special Olympics LA athletesTorch Run… this is another way that you help our athletes strive to be their best.

Many branches of the military do a tremendous job of helping our athletes.  From moving and hauling equipment, Volunteering, and even just taking pictures for our athletes, these men and women are big supporters of SOLA!

To all branches of the Military, THANK YOU, we pay tribute to you on this Memorial Day 2012!

Here are a few words from Northwest Area athlete, Channing Ewing about State Summer Games this past weekend.

“I had a blast this year!! I really enjoyed meeting Jed Collins of the New Orleans Saints at the opening ceremonies. The jazz band at the opening ceremonies were amazing. They reminded me of new Orleans. I had a lot of fun playing volleyball with my unified partners. They were awesome!!! I learned so much from them!! I also loved Olympic town and enjoyed meeting the Southeastern Louisiana University Football and Baseball players. As usual, the dance was a blast!!!”
