Weight Loss Wednesday Virgil Update

Update from a previous post…Special Olympics Louisiana athlete Virgil Atkinson has lost 15 pounds so far! Keep the comments and words of encouragement coming!

Virgil went for his first medical check up recently and the doctor advised that losing 150lbs in a few months would not be healthy and he should try to lose 50lbs. by September. We here at Special Olympics Louisiana are still holding him to the full 150lbs., but are pushing back the deadline. Virgil will weigh in again at the 2012 State Indoor Games, March 9 – 11. We will keep you posted!

Food, music, and a good cause

This morning we are sitting down with Maria Sanchez, Director of Special Projects SE Region about the upcoming Blues and BBQ event March 23 & 24.  Check out our candid interview below!

Can you explain what Blues and BBQ is about?

Blues & BBQ is Louisiana’s biggest BBQ challenge.  Its mission is to bring business and tourism to Hammond, while raising money for local charities.

Where does it take place?

It takes place in Downtown Hammond, along the railroad tracks, from the train station past Cate Street Seafood station.

Who does it benefit?

It benefits Special Olympics Louisiana, TARC, and Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center.

What can people expect?

Days filled with food, music and entertainment!  Tyler Kinchen & the Right Pieces and Bottoms Up will provide the musical entertainment for the event.

Why would people want to go?

Why not is the answer!  You spend a perfect day with family, friends and your community enjoying great food, while contributing to 3 local charities that need help!

Athletes get Healthy in NOLA

Tomorrow, some of our athletes will participate in a Healthy Athlete event in New Orleans.  The event, LSU Dental Day, is done in conjunction with Special Smiles and will take place at the LSU School of Dentistry.  Dental students will perform x-rays, teeth cleaning and a full exam for our athletes.  This is a wonderful program and we are excited that we can give our athletes this opportunity.

Take Action

Doing some searching for the blog this morning, I came across another blog, The R-Word Reporter.  This woman and mother has taking to blogging to let the world know that using the R-Word is NOT acceptable.  She reports on movies and TV shows that are using the R-Word and describes how it is hurtful and why it should not be used.

Once you have read the R-Word Reporter, head over to www.r-word.org and take the Pledge to END the WORD!
